Manually Configuring a Tape Library on i operating system ... IOPs or IOPless IOAs

Troubleshooting

Problem

IBM tape libraries include 3590, 9427, 357x, and 358x. To manually configure a tape library because auto configuration is not turned on or because the device was manually deleted, you should follow one of the procedures listed in this document, depending on if the tape library is attached to a 6501, 2729, 2749 or 6534 IOPs or IOPless IOAs. Do not use this for 3494s.

Resolving The Problem

IBM tape libraries include 3590, 9427, 357x, and 358x. If you need to manually configure a tape library because auto configuration is not turned on or because the device was manually deleted, you should follow one of the procedures listed below, depending on if the tape library is attached to a 6501, 2729, 2749, or 6534 IOPs and IOPless IOAs. Do not use this for 3494s.

Tape Library Attached to a SCSI or Fibre Multiple Function IOA

If the tape library is attached to a SCSI or Fibre Multiple Function IOA, it can be manually configured on an i system or partition by doing the following:

1. On the operating system command line, type the following:

STRSST Press Enter.

2. On the System Service Tools (SST) screen, select Option 1, Start a service tool, and press Enter.
3. On the Start a Service Tool screen, select Option 7, Hardware service manager, and press Enter.
4. On the Hardware Service Manager screen, select Option 2, Logical hardware resources (buses, IOPs, controllers, and so on), and press Enter.
5. On the Logical Hardware Resources screen, select Option 1, System bus resources, and press Enter.
6. On the Logical Hardware Resources on System Bus screen, locate the 2809 Multiple Function IOP. Select the 2809 using Option 9, Resources associated with IOP, and press Enter.
7. On the Logical Hardware Resources Associated with IOP screen, the screen will look similar to the following:

Opt     Description             Type-Model     Status         Resource Name         Multiple Function IOP   2809-001       Operational    CMB01           Multiple Function IOA 2729-001       Operational    DC01             Tape Library        9427-210       Operational    TAPMLB01               Tape Unit         7208-012       Operational    TAP01 Write down the resource name for the Tape Library and the Tape Unit. In this example, the Tape Library is TAPMLB01 and the Tape Unit is TAP01. Note: If you do not find the tape library resource under the IOA storage controller, then the IOA may need to be power cycled, the cables may need to be checked, and/or the tape library may need to be configured differently or power cycled.

8. Press F3 three times.
9. On the Exit System Service Tools screen, press Enter to continue ending SST.
10. On the operating system command line, type the following:

CRTDEVMLB Press Enter.

11. On the Create Device Description (Media Lib) (CRTDEVMLB) screen, type the device description. Do not use the naming conventions TAPCTLXX. Use names such as TAPMLBxx or TAPLIBxx. Type *TAP for the device class. Type the Tape Library resource name for the Resource name parameter (example from Step 7 would be TAPMLB01). Take the defaults for the other options, and press Enter.

Create Device Desc (Media Lib) (CRTDEVMLB)                                                                                                 Type choices, press Enter.                                                                                                                                   Device description . . . . . . .  TAPMLBxx Name                           Device class . . . . . . . . . .  *TAP *OPT, *TAP                     Resource name  . . . . . . . . .  TAPMLB01 Name, *NONE                   Device type  . . . . . . . . . .  *RSRCNAME *RSRCNAME, 3494, 3495, 3590...

12. On the Operating System command line, type the following:

CRTDEVTAP Press Enter.

13. On the Create Device Desc (Tape) (CRTDEVTAP) screen, type the device description (TAP01, QTAPE1, T1, and so on), and type the Tape Unit resource name for the Resource name parameter (example from step 7 would be TAP01). Take the defaults for the other options, and press Enter.

Create Device Desc (Tape) (CRTDEVTAP)                                                                                               Type choices, press Enter.                                                                                                                               Device description . . . . . . .   TAPxx Name                         Device type  . . . . . . . . . .   *RSRCNAME   *RSRCNAME, 2440, 3422, 3430. Device model . . . . . . . . . .   *RSRCNAME   *RSRCNAME, 1, 2, 12, A01... Resource name  . . . . . . . . .   TAP01 Name, *NONE, TAP02     ...

The tape library has now been configured on the IOA. Tape Library Attached to a 6501 Storage IOP If the tape library is attached to a 6501 Storage IOP, it can be manually configured by doing the following:

1. When the system is IPLed, a resource name is generated by the system for both the tape library and the tape unit (you no longer need a tape controller which has been replaced by the tape library). On the operating system command line, type the following:

WRKHDWRSC *STG Press the Enter key.

2. On the Work with Storage Resources screen, locate the 6501 Storage Controller with a Tape Library indented under it. The Tape Library will probably be resource TAPMLBxx (or possibly TAPLIBxx). Select the TAPMLBxx using Option 9, Work with Resource, and press Enter. Note: If you do not find the tape library resource under the IOA storage controller, the IOA may need to be power cycled, the cables may need to be checked, and/or the tape library may need to be configured differently or power cycled.
3. On the Work with Storage Controller Resources screen, select TAPMLBxx using Option 5, Work with configuration descriptions, and press Enter.
4. On the Work with Configuration Descriptions screen, select Option 1, Create, next to the blank line, and press Enter.
